When we first landscaped our yard, I have to admit that I was a bit intimidated by the idea of adding garden decor. I had always focused on plants and flowers, but the empty spaces presented a whole new styling challenge.

While every part of the garden needed to serve a purpose, I also wanted it to look beautiful. It took me a few tries to come up with a “formula” for decorating these areas, but I have finally cracked the code, so today I wanted to share with you the easiest way to style your backyard.

1. Stylish Planters and Pots

You don’t have to stick every single plant in the ground! I think one of the best ways to add some visual pop to your garden is by placing some plants in really decorative pots.

There’s something so warm and beautiful about using terracotta pots—they give your garden such a traditional, rustic feel that I just adore.

If you don’t have a ton of space, you can create a sweet little garden using mason jars as pots. How charming is that? Or you could get a ceramic or clay bowl and fill it with several different succulents.

Don’t be afraid to get super creative with your plant stands! I love the idea of using wine, bourbon, or whiskey barrels that have been cut in half. Or what about an old claw foot bathtub you’ve filled up with soil?

You can even find metal stands that look like everyday objects but have holders for your pots built right in. Whatever you choose, I’ve found that looking for planters that add some height is a great way to create different levels in your garden.

2. Enchanting Garden Structures

If you happen to have a covered outdoor area, you’ve got the perfect frame for growing vining plants. But if you don’t, think about building some type of shelter. You could go for a gazebo, a pergola, or a simple arch.

The one you pick will really depend on how much coverage you want and the amount of square footage you have to play with.

Once your structure is up, it’s time to check out some garden design ideas and pick a flowering plant or two that will vine its way up. You’ll be surrounded by colorful flowers and blooms!

And if you live in the right climate, you could even grow grapes or lemons. Just keep in mind that both of these plants have heavier vines, so they’ll need a more solid structure to support them.

3. Create an Inviting Atmosphere

I think adding a fire pit to your garden instantly gives you a focal point and the perfect spot for everyone to gather. You can choose a modern design that creates such a great ambiance. You won’t feel a ton of heat from these types, but they produce a really interesting visual effect that I love.

Another option is using your fire pit to create a whole outdoor living space. You can buy a portable, pre-made metal pit or get one custom-built from stone or pavers.

This way, you can build the exact size you need to fit your garden. Just place some benches or outdoor sofas around it, and you’ve got a place to lounge outside and enjoy the weather!

4. Tranquility and Beauty

Water features can be a lot of work, depending on the type and size you decide to go with. But wow, even a small fountain can add natural noise and such calming sound effects to your garden.

The only other way to really add sound is with a wind chime, and sometimes those can be more annoying than the gentle sound of running water.

If you’re ready to commit to a really serious water feature, think about adding a fish pond that has a fountain. You’ll have to care for the fish and maintain the fountain hardware, but it is so worth it for the calming effect it has on you and the whole space.

For the fish, you could consider koi, but be warned, they can be expensive. Goldfish are a much more affordable alternative and just as sweet!

5. Guiding the Way

You definitely need to have pathways throughout your garden. It makes it so much easier to enjoy all of your hard work and maintain your plants. A modern garden looks amazing with pavers, concrete, or wood.

For a more rustic garden vibe, you can use pea gravel to get a natural-looking path. If you want to create a vintage garden, using salvaged bricks or flat stones is a beautiful touch.

If you have a big yard, your flower bed might not take up the whole backyard. In that case, your pathway will connect the flower bed to the other parts of your yard. Maybe it leads from the patio to the garden and then winds around to the fire pit.

6. Illuminating Your Garden

Adding some lighting to your garden is a game changer because it lets you enjoy the beauty of your space even after the sun goes down. You can do this with string lights that you hang all across the garden. They create such a warm, soft glow over the whole space and light up your outdoor area perfectly.

For a more decorative look, you could try adding fairy lights. These are tiny LEDs that will twinkle and glow. They usually aren’t bright enough to create a ton of light, but they are more of a decorative touch to highlight certain areas of your garden.

If you have a pergola or gazebo, you can string the lights on it for a magical fairy garden effect. I love choosing the ones that twinkle for a starry night look.

7. Fence and Wall Solutions

If you’ve got a fence around your garden, then this is the perfect opportunity to add a little more decor. You can have decorative wrought iron panels mounted on the wood, or you could alternate between metal and wood panels for a really elegant and modern-looking garden fence.

You should consider some DIY garden decor ideas for a more personalized touch. Try painting a colorful mural on the wall or installing some decorative lighting to create a unique effect when the sun goes down. There’s also the option of turning your fence into a living wall.

You can grow mosses and succulents on a panel. Just be careful with this idea, succulents can be surprisingly heavy, and you’ll need to reinforce the wall to support that extra weight.

8. Incorporating Garden Statues

Statues are such an easy way to add decorative elements to your garden. They are durable and so beautiful. Look for sculptures that really complement the style of garden you are trying to create.

A garden gnome is always a popular choice, though some people find them a little creepy. Modern gardens look so good with abstract ornaments.

Garden statues also come in several different materials. Try adding a few different types to your garden for some visual interest and variety. You can find glass figurines, metal sculptures, or all kinds of stone creations.

If you have a lot of flowers and other plants that need to be pollinated, think about adding a birdbath and a bird feeder. This will encourage birds to make your backyard their home and will help your plants grow stronger.

9. Purposeful Garden Decor Ideas

Your garden decorations don’t just have to be pretty. They can also serve a totally functional purpose. If you have a fire pit in your backyard, why not turn your log storage into something decorative?

You can choose a metal rack that lets you store multiple sizes of logs. That way, you’ll always have wood ready for an impromptu campfire.

A really common outdoor decor idea is to have a birdbath. It can be so much more than just a shallow bowl that holds water. It can sit on a decorative pedestal or have cute little bird figurines on the side.

If you’re growing herbs, you can even have decorative signs to label each plant. These are more than just simple signs, they can be handmade or pottery signs with a really unique character.

10. Adding Artistic Touches

You should look for ways to create a totally unique look for your garden. There are local artists everywhere who use a variety of materials to create custom garden art. You can add to your garden design by placing a few art pieces that look like animals.

So many garden ideas suggest hiding this art among your plants. They will be a beautiful surprise for people as they wander through your garden.

If you have an empty spot in your garden, think about placing one huge art piece there. It will be a crowning statement piece and a focal point for your backyard.

I would look for art that will be durable enough to be left outside for a long time. Metal, glass, cork, and hardwood are all beautiful and durable materials.

11. Elevate Your Outdoor Space

Furniture is such a common part of outdoor garden decor ideas. You really need a spot where you can just sit down and relax in your own backyard. Even if you only have a tiny balcony, you should have a little place where you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or a drink in the evening.

If you have enough room, you can create a whole outdoor living room setup. Just place a loveseat or a sofa with an accent chair or two. You don’t need a lot of space for this, though. A small cafe table and a couple of chairs are all you really need.

12. Embrace Contemporary Charm

Potted plants are a fantastic way to create a modern garden design. You can try using large pavers or flat stones to create a smooth and trim lawn. Then you can make a green space by arranging large pots with several plants in each one.

I would choose pots in modern colors, like black or white. They should have long straight lines and smooth curves with very little ornamentation.

Modern gardens use a mix of materials. You could have large stepping stones that go through your pond or a wood deck that overlooks your water feature. You can also create borders and trim with a moat of river rocks.

I’d skip the messy-looking flowering plants and stick with simple greenery that you can keep trimmed and neat.
