Working with an open-plan layout may make creating a functional yet stylish kitchen seem impossible. But with some creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking even the most integrated kitchens can become beautiful havens.
From new builds to classic renovations, we have you covered. This article will walk you through the hottest trends for 2025 to transform your kitchen into an inviting space that dictates the style for the rest of your home.
Kitchen Color Trends for Season 2025
You already know that color is a total game-changer. It can take even the simplest room and make it feel vibrant, alive, and so memorable, just by picking the right shades.
This is a thousand times more true for the kitchen, a spot where we spend so much of our time.
For the 2025 season, the color trends are absolutely gorgeous, ranging from natural neutrals and oak to beautiful petrol-green and charcoal, often with little pops of black.
We’re also seeing sage, some amazing exotic shades with orange palettes taking center stage, and bold, vibrant choices like a deep-blue or other dark, intense tones.
Two-toned kitchens are having a huge moment, along with warm, natural selections. Think clay, copper, gold, henna, and ginger—so cozy!
It feels like nature is a massive inspiration this season, with colors from terracotta soil all the way to the green hues of the wild. And it looks like for the third year in a row, dark hues are going to have a major presence in modern kitchen color palettes.

As I mentioned, deep blue is going to be a hot trend, and I love how it’s used in this project by the Portuguese architecture studio Fala Atelier. It’s so cool how they transformed an old house in Porto into a contemporary, on-trend home. The kitchen cabinetry and appliances make such a strong, colorful statement in that signature hue.

It’s so interesting how blue tones can give a kitchen a certain vintage or rustic charm. Even when the design is super contemporary in its look and function, like with the Metalwood by Key Cucine, that little hint of vintage is still there. So lovely!

Here is just a magnificent example of contemporary two-toned kitchen design. That saffron yellow on the comfy kitchen islands creates a beautiful juxtaposition with the muted grays of the concrete base. I also love the horizontal bar that lets guests get in on the action while food is being prepped!

The Dark Colored Kitchens Are still Trendy
Some of the most award-winning kitchen designs I’ve seen include at least one dark color that acts as a strong accent. What’s new and exciting this season is the search for contrast and juxtaposition.
Dark colors are being offset with lighter or brighter ones, which creates visually entertaining and super appealing levels of color contrast.

Another approach to color design is using natural and earthy shades in a very contemporary setting. Here, the inspiration from nature shines through with those highly attractive veneers, one in white glazed oak and the other in Brazil glazed oak. They really take center stage, giving a unique note to this modern, functional composition.

In this kitchen, dark shades of gray and a new color called vino (which is based on Marsala, a former Pantone Color of the Year) are entwined into one cozy arrangement that has some lovely vintage hints. The Casa Vino by Rational kitchen combines all the perks of a modern, high-tech lifestyle with that “old-fashioned” cozy way of living. I just love it.

Trendy Kitchen Cabinet Materials & Finishes
Beyond just the color trends, there’s a visible shift in the materials being used for kitchen cabinetry and appliances. The secret recipe seems to be blending a sophisticated color choice with high-quality materials.
Think wood, concrete, Corian, glass or organic glass, ceramic, stone, or metal in all different shades. It’s a recipe for a unique and beautiful kitchen! Designers are playing with all sorts of styles, from classic to modern, country house to high-tech modernistic.
They’re also playing with surfaces, mixing matt and glossy, dark and light, with and without handles. Each one has its own unique density and appearance.

Here is an excellent contemporary example of the “richness of simplicity” concept. This kitchen project from INDada entwines bright and modern shapes, materials, and colors into one stylish and functional design. The details are so poetic, and it offers infinite configurations.

Transitional Style Kitchens or Urban Rustic
Transitional kitchens are one of my absolute favorite styles to explore. They offer such a great variety of textural and material combinations and include a dynamic mix of vintage, classic, and contemporary design elements.
This artistic freedom gives designers a chance to incorporate elements from both traditional and modern design, a trend that’s just getting started. You can have a rustic kitchen in your trendy city apartment or an urban design with natural, cozy features. Transitional has been an important kitchen style for a few years, and I expect we’ll see it stay popular.

In this DeVol kitchen, marble countertops with light patterns are paired with stylish reclaimed wood cabinets that have a vintage presence. It’s all done in a mild and neutral color palette that just exudes freshness and ease. It’s so beautiful.

Woven coppiced-beech panels, which are a classic Cox touch, are used on the backs of some cabinets. Little design elements, like drawers and the sink unit, are adorned with round copper-lined holes for opening, while the cupboards have little wooden knobs made from matching wood.
By combining dynamic and expressive materials like copper, wood, marble, and glass, the designers have entwined the rustic charm of a cottage with the high functionality that modern life requires.

British designer-craftsman Sebastian Cox has designed a series of kitchens for the English brand DeVol that they call “Urban – rustic,” and it’s such a suitable name for this intriguing and artistic composition.
Just look at these examples of this unique aesthetic! Here we have contemporary and fashionable design elements, like the lighting and material combinations, and high-tech appliances, all presented in a natural and rustic style arrangement of wood and ceramic tiles.

Industrial Style Kitchens Are an Emerging Trend
The Principia by Arclinea and Antonio Citterio is such a stylish, elegant, and original combination of materials and colors. It entwines untouched wooden structures and furnishings with stainless steel in innovative colors.
This is generated with PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) technology, and the designer offers a really unique experience and an evolution of the work zones in this kitchen project.

The Estivale Kitchen, designed with Benedini Associati, combines the textures of a dramatic black marble top with warm oak surfaces that add a rustic charm to the contemporary composition.
This kitchen has multiple structures that entwine the glamour of illuminated glass shelving with shining aluminum finishes in a brass-colored satin antique Liquid Metal. The mix of robust dark materials and warm wooden structures (with a vintage flavor) is always a winning combo when it comes to modern kitchen design.

Here is another kitchen design that includes the warm, natural presence of unpolished wood and fresh green accents from living plants. The combination of oak and a cappuccino soft lacquer works its magic to full effect. So dreamy!
This exquisite kitchen design, the Bondi by Leicht Küchen, presents us with such a skillful combination of contrasts. The bright wood surfaces meet a velvety matt lacquer, and the warm tone of the wood meets the cooler vibe of the carbon gray.
I love the seamless transition from the dark countertops (which can be granite, marble, or metal) into the light wooden cabinetry. It has such an intriguing aesthetic. Plus, those fresh green accents add to the unique and charming composition of materials, textures, and colors.

Trendy Kitchen Countertops – Materials and Colors
When we talk about modern kitchen design, trendy choices, and innovative solutions, the countertops need to be more than just stylish. They also have to be durable, functional, and have the right appearance.
So, here are some of the hottest and trendiest materials for next year, featuring design combinations that meet both style and quality requirements.
Reclaimed Wood Countertop
And of course, for anyone who prefers a more natural and stylish appearance, wood is always a beautiful and aesthetic choice. Lately, reclaimed wood countertops have become a hot pick for kitchen designs. It’s a sustainable and nature-friendly material, so it’s a conscious choice.
We all know that using wood is a more environmentally sustainable resource than natural stones like marble and granite because wood is renewable. Using reclaimed wood is even better because of its double use.
So, a reclaimed wood countertop not only brings irresistible charm and personality into your kitchen design, but it’s also the right choice for our planet.

Marble Kitchen Countertops
As I’ve mentioned before, marble is just synonymous with luxury and style. It’s become a classic choice for any elegant setting. It’s a functional and stable material, offers a great selection of aesthetics and colors, and it responds well to temperature and mechanical damage. The only thing is you have to be a little careful with stains.

Metal Kitchen Countertops
Metal is always a trendy and fashionable choice, especially for more urban or modernistic design arrangements. That shine of the metal is just irresistible! The newest technologies and innovations offer great durability and rust avoidance for metal surfaces designed for kitchen countertops.

Quartz Kitchen Countertops
Quartz is super attractive for its durability and its consistent color characteristics. It offers an impressive selection of colors in white, black, or gray hues and is quickly becoming a popular and functional choice in modern kitchen design.

Granite Kitchen Countertops
Granite is still high on the list of trendy kitchen countertops for 2025. It’s often cited as the most durable natural material available and is known for resisting cracks and chips really well. You can place hot pots directly on the countertop, cut right on the surface without damage, and spills wipe away easily. It’s a workhorse!

Modern Kitchen Design Ideas for the Next Season
So, to sum it all up, what are the newest trends when it comes to kitchen design and furnishing? There seem to be two parallel tendencies in contemporary kitchen design this season, and their distinction is based on the material selection.
The first tendency is all about a traditional craft appearance and a natural atmosphere. It requires a lot of craftsmanship and hands-on work, using raw materials and simple, clean silhouettes with raw edges.
This style still preserves the minimalist look of modern furniture design without too much decoration. Wooden elements are dominant in these trendy kitchens, even if they are connected and represented as laminate or parquet surfaces. The projects by DeVol are a perfect example of this trend.
The other tendency this season is the opposite. Using high-tech innovations in materials and surfaces, designers are creating large, massive volumes with shining surfaces and simple shapes.
Here, we still see wooden elements, but they are used more as artistic additions and details, not as the main material. Dark colors and contrast are also very prominent. The kitchen designs by Mina and bulthaup are a wonderful representation of this trend.

The minimalist and innovative b2 kitchen is inspired by the golden rule of craftsmanship: “Tools and materials must always be kept tidy and close at hand.” I love that!
Viewing the kitchen as an experimental factory, the design’s functional organization reduces it to three sculptural elements: the kitchen tool cabinet, the workbench, and the kitchen appliance cabinet.
The flexibility, elegant silhouette, and innovative charm of these features mean that the bulthaup b2 can also adapt to new spatial circumstances and multiple design variations.

The inspiration drawn from the iconic Airstream caravans defines the smooth curves and retro-contemporary atmosphere of The Air Kitchen project. Some of its charming features include aluminum panels, polished rivets, and futuristic push-to-open solid surface doors.
The designers used cutting-edge eco-materials, easy-to-maintain surfaces, and light colors, all adorned with small, warm oak details and framing.

The smooth and pleasing curves, so characteristic of the caravan silhouette, along with the iconic round openings, define the vintage twist of the otherwise futuristic and contemporary look of the Air Kitchens design.
Slender stainless steel legs or a matching base for the cabinets give them the appearance of floating. The light color scheme and single solid volumes contribute to that exciting feeling of space and airiness in this modern kitchen, designed and built in Great Britain.

Here’s a similar kitchen island shape designed by Pattina Kitchen for Sanwa Company in Japan. It features a matte black frame, a rough wood grain pattern, and an Italian-made ceramic tile countertop. The composition has a simple, clear-lined construction that possesses a certain elegance and modern appearance, with just a hint of retro design and an “old-fashioned” spirit.

Speaking of lightness and style, here is another unique and charming kitchen design by DeVol, featuring a woven coppiced-beech panel and a clear-lined silhouette. It’s simple, functional, and elegant. This kitchen island can be suited to multiple design arrangements.

Metal Kitchen Cabinets
This season, Minacciolo is introducing Minà, a bold, novel rust finish for kitchen design. It’s an imaginative recall of the vintage appearance found in Italian tradition. This unusual material selection offers a highly textured reddish-brown rust effect that feels retro yet decidedly contemporary.
The multi-purpose Minà Island has a special treatment that gives it a unique aged look and an appealing texture. Artistic, custom-made knobs and details add to the vintage charm of the whole assembly.
The tall cabinets are reminiscent of ice-boxes from the early decades of the 1900s, and the warm reddish highlights introduce a cozy nuance to the space.

Another novelty that evokes the tradition of Italian master craftsmen is this playfully arranged worktop, which is part of the Minà kitchen project. Combining traditions, retro hints, and cutting-edge technology, the designer composed a multifunctional island with an artistic and dynamic pattern.
Minà features a pewter-plated steel worktop combined with a breakfast bar tiled in lava stone. The exquisite artisanal surfaces of the island are made by laying Sicilian glazed volcanic stone tiles over a water-repellent support. It’s innovative, artistic, and brings a rich textural and colorful effect back into the kitchen.

Small Kitchens – Large Cooks
I know that in confined urban living spaces, a large kitchen isn’t always an option, and sometimes it’s not even a necessity. People who love to cook but rarely do so might enjoy the challenge of improvising in a small kitchen.
Here are some examples of small kitchen settings that don’t lack style, trendiness, or aesthetic appearance at all.

The Board Kitchen by Snaidero is a contemporary industrial solution for compact environments. It’s tailored for limited space that calls for flexible and stylish solutions. The Board project represents an evolution in contemporary kitchen design that offers functional solutions, high quality, and a trendy appearance.

Thanks to new technologies, innovations, and designers’ imaginations, there are so many possibilities for kitchen design that the only things that should guide us are our lifestyle, location, and sense of taste. For city dwellers, the possibilities are infinite: small and functional kitchens, jazzy urban compositions, fabric-produced articles, and innovative inventions that create surfaces resistant to damage.
For those who prefer a more natural lifestyle and want to feel connected to nature, the trends leading to more rustic design, recycled materials, and natural compositions would be a better fit. Just take your pick and enjoy!
