Have you ever thought about how many wood pallets get tossed out? It’s kind of staggering! But the great news is, that pallet wood is an incredible raw material for all sorts of creative projects.

For a long time now, DIYers have known the secret to using them for some truly innovative garden designs, and I’m so excited to share some of my favorites with you!

1. Raised Beds and Plant Boxes

I personally think using pallet wood to build a simple garden bed in your yard is such a fantastic idea. Whether you want to go big or small, this is one of the best pallet garden projects if you’re aiming for a more refined look with reclaimed wood.

You can even stain or paint the wood to coordinate with other wooden elements around your home or in your garden. It’s such a beautiful compromise!

Raised garden beds made from pallets are a game-changer for people who have arthritis or just find it tough to get up and down from the ground. If your yard has issues with dampness, you can build your raised pallet garden beds with legs.

Just keep in mind that you’ll need to line these wooden containers, landscape fabric works perfectly, and then fill them up with potting soil before you start planting.

2. Shelf and Pot Hanger Gardens

Turning a pallet into a shelf or a pot hanger has to be one of the more unique garden projects out there. I just love it! Even though the shelves are narrow by design, they’re definitely big enough for small flower or herb pots.

For a really rustic vibe, you could plant herbs in mason jars and line them up on the pallet shelves. Smaller wooden or metal boxes are also a great fit and can hold all sorts of little plants.

Pallet shelves can be freestanding right on the ground, which is a super easy setup. If you’d rather, you can hang your pallet shelves on a patio wall or attach them to a fence. It all depends on how you want to design your garden.

You can use the slats as shelves or as flat planks to hang pots and baskets from. To keep the recycling theme going, you could even cut plastic soda or water bottles in half and nail them to the slats to use as planters. So clever!

For a truly dramatic garden feature, which you know I’m all about, try using vertically stacked pallet panels to create a tall fence. Then, you can randomly hang galvanized buckets filled with herbs or trailing ivies all along the rustic fence you’ve made.

I’ve even seen people add hooks to hold their gardening tools, watering cans, and other useful items. To finish it off, you can decorate your pallet fence with a metal letter monogram or hang some old metal advertising signs for a charming, country feel.

3. Freestanding Pallet Planter Gardens

You can create a beautiful freestanding pallet garden bed just by nailing a pallet to the front of an A-frame structure.

This movable garden is absolutely ideal if you need to be able to shuffle your flowers or herbs to a sunnier spot in the yard. I love the idea of adding caster wheels to the bottom to make it even easier to move around.

Anyone can put together a DIY pallet planter with multiple shelves using wood upcycled from just two pallets. A great tip is to use chalkboard paint to make erasable labels in front of each section of your vertical garden.

This comes in so handy for an herb garden, where you might be changing out what you plant pretty frequently.

4. Garden Fencing With Pallets

You can hang a whole pallet or cut it into several smaller planter boxes to arrange along your wooden fence. Trailing plants look especially beautiful as they cascade down from high-mounted pallet boxes. It’s a great way to add color and life to a spot in the garden that might otherwise be a little dull.

When you’re planning your pallet garden, think about alternating bright flowers or herbs with ivy to get a wonderful variety of textures and colors.

What’s also really interesting is that broken-down wood pallets can be used to create the fence itself. This is probably one of the most budget-friendly ways to build a wooden fence, and it’s such a creative recycling idea!

I love the idea of hanging fairy lights from your pallet planter or fence to give the area a magical charm at night.

5. Herb Pallet Garden Ideas

Since recycled pallet wood might have a chemical treatment, it’s super important to make sure you have the right kind before you use it for growing herbs. Pallet boards are treated by manufacturers to prevent invasive species, and they do this either with heat treatment or fumigation.

Heat-treated pallets will have the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) logo along with an “HT” stamp. A fumigated pallet will be marked with “MB,” which stands for methyl bromide, the chemical they use.

You should always give any pallet a good wash with hot, soapy water before using it for anything edible. I also recommend sealing it with linseed oil or painting it with water-based latex paint. Most herbs do really well in pallet gardens.

I’m thinking of mint, basil, thyme, and oregano. Lavender is another great one that grows well in a pallet herb garden, and you can use it either as an herb or as a fragrant cut flower. So beautiful!

6. Vertical Wall Garden

Wall pallet gardening is such a creative way to turn pallets into something really useful. The ideas for a vertical pallet garden are almost endless.

You could create an herb garden, a flower garden, a little vegetable patch, or a stunning succulent display. You just need to be sure to place your vertical pallet garden somewhere it will get full sunlight.

Vertical gardening is a perfect planter idea for anyone living in an apartment, condo, or another small home who wants to get into gardening but doesn’t have a lot of room. All you really need is a small outdoor space, like a balcony or a patio. I’ve seen people put together a DIY pallet garden in under an hour!

It’s important to remember that a wall-mounted pallet planter box gets quite heavy once it’s filled with wet soil. So, you’ll want to make sure you mount it securely using large wood screws, metal brackets, or cleats. You can also rest the bottom of the vertical pallet garden on the ground for some extra support.

7. Pallet Flower Boxes for Your Garden

The ideas for flower box pallet gardens are almost endless, which is so exciting! You could use a whole pallet to make a vertical garden filled with your favorite flowers. Another idea is to split a pallet into several smaller vertical units that can serve as individual flower boxes.

Or, you could use a pallet as a shelf for flower pots. I especially love this idea if you prefer to keep your flowering plants in pots instead of planting them directly into the pallet.

Flowers can make nearly any pallet garden idea even more beautiful. A vertical pallet garden can be a stunning backdrop for larger plants in ceramic pots or planters that are set right on the ground.

Instead of a basic rectangular flower box under your windows, imagine nailing an entire vertical pallet to the wall. It becomes a stacked flower box, giving you three or more rows of gorgeous flowers under your window sills instead of just one. What a huge impact!

8. Innovative Pallet Garden Designs

For something that is basically just a garden in a wooden box, the ideas for pallet gardens can be incredibly creative. I love a vertical pallet garden hanging on a wall; it’s one of the best ways to garden when you’re short on space.

You can paint your pallet planter any color you can imagine, or add fun wooden cutouts, stencil designs, metal flowers, or other decorative touches to make it your own.

You can also break a pallet into several small wooden planter units to hang along a wall or fence. They’re like little flower boxes, perfect for filling with succulents, flowering plants, or decorative herbs.

Another brilliant idea is to use the pallet as a sort of frame and hang metal buckets from it to hold your actual plants.

9. Sustainable Garden Pallet Creations

There are just so many ways to upcycle pallets for your garden. Because they’re so economical, you might find that they help you get creative with areas of your yard where you had nothing before.

You could use the wood to build a compost bin or a stacked, multi-level planter box. I’ve even seen people break down an extra pallet and use the wood to create a matching potting bench.

By attaching a vertical trellis to a flat pallet garden, you can grow beans and other climbing plants that need that support. Or, you could make two matching pallet planter boxes and stand a metal trellis between them.

This would be a great way to define two separate areas in your garden. As the vines grow up the trellis, you get a living screen that is both beautiful and functional.

But upcycling pallets in the garden doesn’t stop at shelves, planters, and fences. You can cut pallet slats into random lengths and lay them over gravel to make a really attractive wooden garden path.

Use some of the wood to build a bench under a window that coordinates with your other pallet pieces. You could even reinforce two pallets with 2x4s, top it with a covered mattress, and hang it with sturdy rope to create a new swing. So many possibilities!
