Your patio is what extends your living space into the outdoors, making your house truly feel like a home. But what if that space feels unusable once the sun goes down?
In this article I am sharing some easy and effective lighting ideas so that you can make your patio look beautiful, even after dark.
1. Creating Ambiance with String Lights
I have to admit, outdoor string lights have become a total classic, and for good reason! They’ve proven they are so much more than just a passing fad. I see this gorgeous, atmospheric solution everywhere from high-end restaurant patios to casual backyard get-togethers.
What I love most is how incredibly versatile and simple they are to hang, especially since the power cord is just part of the whole look. You can use these patio lights to create such a warm and yummy glow that gives you plenty of visibility without any of the harshness you get from a standard fixture.
And let’s be clear, string lighting is definitely not the same thing as Christmas lights, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with them!
If you make them a permanent part of your patio design, you can get so creative throughout the year. I love the idea of swapping out the everyday bulbs for different colors and shapes to perfectly match the season.
Just remember to double check that your lights are rated for outdoor use. It’s so important to make sure your chosen lighting can stand up to the elements, whether you’re hanging them for a single party or for the entire season.

2. Embracing Rustic Charm
Can we talk about how string lights are the ultimate chameleons of patio decor? For a rustic spin on this modern trend, I love the idea of choosing Edison style bulbs. The ones with those noticeable filaments inside look so much warmer than typical halogen or LED options.
Bringing in lots of natural textiles is key to your patio design. Try pairing your lights with macrame wall decor, or find an outdoor chandelier made from wicker or macrame. Paper lanterns can also add some wonderful texture when used thoughtfully.
Even though they’re not bright enough to be the main light source, you absolutely have to include some candles in a rustic patio space. If you can’t have a big fire pit, a standalone electric fireplace or a small furnace can be a great substitute.
Rustic style is so much more organic than other trends. It’s totally okay to leave some of the power cords showing. I think draping the ends of the string lights down around the patio furniture gives it a more natural and lived in look.

3. Enhancing Your Poolside Lighting
I adore the idea of using tea lights or lanterns to frame the walkway from your patio to the pool or hot tub. Draping some large globe lights over the water creates the perfect mood lighting for a late night swim. Plus, the lights will look so lovely reflecting on the pool’s surface.
Most of the time, lighting ideas for a patio are placed above the swimming pool. However, you shouldn’t miss the chance to put some lighting beneath the water’s surface too.
Try to focus the pool lighting around important spots like the stairs, the diving board, or any other design elements you want to highlight.
Some pools are definitely better for built in lighting than others. But I think illuminating your pool or hot tub from the inside will take your outdoor lighting design to a completely new and beautiful level.

4. Covered Spaces Illuminated
If your covered patio space is missing the wiring you need, don’t worry! There are so many battery powered and rechargeable pendant lights to pick from. You can hang these fixtures from a ceiling hook when you need them, then just bring them inside to recharge when they’re not in use.
String lighting looks just as beautiful draped under a covered patio as it does strung up above an open yard. For a fun, Bohemian vibe, you can mix together several types of accent lights. I love combining fairy lights, icicle lights, globe lights, and paper lanterns.
Try stretching your string lights beyond your covered porch to a nearby spot, like a fire pit, hot tub, or grill area. This will make your backyard feel so cohesive and you won’t need to add separate path lights.

5. Inventive Deck Patio Lighting Ideas
Sometimes just one light source won’t be enough, especially if you live out in a rural area. Even if your space has a fireplace or a fire pit, think about adding some accent deck lights like candles, globe lights, or a pretty hanging lamp.
You can use string lights along the edge of your deck’s shade sail or sun umbrella. Going with solar deck lighting is a great way to get rid of those messy wires. And don’t forget to put a lamp or a candle on your patio table!
If you use your deck as an outdoor living area all the time, the last thing you want is to be messing with an outlet or a switch every time. It’s so worth it to upgrade your lighting with an outlet timer or some Bluetooth enabled plugs that you can control right from your phone.

6. Pergola Enhancements
String lights are truly one of the most versatile outdoor lighting ideas you can use for a pergola.
You can mount them right against your pergola’s support beams for some easy, hassle free lighting that doesn’t need any permanent installation. Or you can drape them from the ceiling for a more romantic feel.
Besides the lighting inside your pergola, don’t forget to light up the outside of it too. I love the look of framing the base or the roof of a pergola with small string lights or some lanterns.
These lights don’t have to provide a lot of ambient light, just enough to show where the pergola starts and ends.
You can also use string lighting to connect your patio with your pergola. Not only do they work as pathway lights between the two areas, but they also help keep your pergola from feeling separate from the rest of your outdoor living space.
To complete your pergola design, add some sheer curtains for extra privacy and to keep away any evening pests. You can even hang mini lights inside the curtains for an extra beautiful glow.

7. Crafting Your Own Patio Lighting Solutions
String lights are definitely the easiest overhead lighting you can install on a patio or in a backyard. All you really need is an outlet, a staple gun or some mounting tape, and a ladder.
Putting in landscape lighting can be a little tricky if your space doesn’t have trees or other things to hang them on. For a short term fix, you can use thin wood stakes spaced out around your patio. If you want a more permanent option, I would go with cedar posts.
Hanging globe lights flush against your porch ceiling can give you the look of downlighting without all the work or expense. You could also mount simple string lights around the border of your patio or porch slab instead of recessed lighting for better visibility.

8. Contemporary Elegance
Using string lighting is a great way to draw attention to or create sleek lines in your patio’s design. Try framing the edge of your patio, roof, pergola, or any other structure that has a unique shape.
You can even design your own geometric angles overhead using just a few sets of string lights.
Funky light fixtures are a staple in all kinds of modern decor. I’m always looking for wall mounted or hanging fixtures that add an edgy, artistic twist to an outdoor space.
Paper lanterns are one of the most popular outdoor lighting ideas in modern design. Just be sure to get a lantern that’s made for outdoor use.
Or, you can go the other way with super simple recessed lighting built right into your porch ceiling. Installing lights along stairways, garden beds, fire pits, and bench seating can really bring your patio design to life.

9. Intimate and Cozy Small Patio Options
To save room on a small patio, it’s really important to focus your lighting efforts upward. The more lighting you can put overhead, the less of your precious square footage you’ll have to give up for free standing light fixtures.
Adding fairy or icicle lights to your home’s exterior or fencing can help draw attention away from the limited space. Making the area brighter and more attractive will help it feel cozy instead of claustrophobic.
You can use potted plants, outdoor decor, or even curtains to hide your lights’ power cords. Or, for a much sleeker and more eco friendly design, you can just opt for solar light fixtures.

10. Porch Illumination Concepts
A lot of covered porches come with permanent light fixtures already installed. Whether your outdoor space has a hanging lamp or just some basic exterior wall sconces, you can supplement the existing lights with some softer accent lighting.
I think it’s a great idea to invest in a main porch light that has a built in ceiling fan for extra functionality. On those warm summer evenings, this simple addition can make your porch a thousand times more comfortable.
Decorate your outdoor tables with real or battery powered candles. If your porch has a dining area, you can design your centerpiece around a beautiful candle or lamp. That soft glow will work as both mood lighting and functional lighting.

11. Backyard Lighting Bliss
Lighting your backyard is all about finding a delicate balance. On one side, you want to have enough ambient light so you and your guests don’t trip and fall. On the other side, you definitely don’t want to spoil your backyard’s romantic atmosphere with a couple of huge floodlights.
Large globe lights are a super trend forward way to add just the right amount of light to your backyard. You can string the lights between your home’s exterior and the trees around it. Or you can install some free standing poles to support your backyard lighting idea.
String lights are also the perfect accent for a fire pit. They won’t overpower the fire’s glow, but you also won’t be left in complete darkness after the flames go out. Spreading lanterns or fairy lights through the nearby trees and bushes creates such a magical, storybook look.

12. Outdoor Living Room Illumination Concepts
One of the best things about having a patio is being able to create an outdoor living room. But if you want to enjoy this living space at night, you’ll need to add some light sources that are both stylish and functional.
You should bring in multiple light sources in various sizes and brightness levels. While a big, vibrant chandelier is perfect during dinner, you might not want something that bright when it’s time for cocktails by the fire pit.
Mirrors are famous for their ability to make a room seem brighter. You can really amplify your patio’s light by hanging an outdoor mirror. It will brighten up the space by reflecting light from your fixtures and any nearby indoor windows.
Make sure to focus lighting around staircases, doorways, and any other spot where good visibility is super important. Framing these areas with small lanterns or some string lights is a subtle way to make your backyard patio safer without messing up the aesthetic.
